Thoughts on therapy
What can I expect in a first therapy session?
You don't need to arrive with a polished explanation of what's wrong. You might know exactly why you're reaching out, or only that something feels difficult to keep carrying on your own.
I want to understand what life is like for you. We can begin with a recent experience, a relationship that feels complicated, or a question you keep returning to. What has been happening? How has it affected you? What have you tried, and what do you wish could be different?
I listen closely, ask questions, and offer feedback as we begin to make sense of what you're facing. We might look at a recent situation from another angle or consider a next step. We start with your life now and bring in earlier experiences when they help. You don't need to tell your whole history in the first session.
You can ask questions too, and tell me when an observation doesn't fit. My aim is for our conversation to give you something useful to take with you: a clearer understanding, a different perspective, or something to try. We can also talk about what you need more of from me.
Before a first session, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss what you're looking for, answer questions, and consider whether we're a fit. Therapy sessions are 50 minutes, with telehealth available across Colorado and in-person appointments at my Denver office.
