Young adults · Identity & direction

Building a life.
Finding your own direction.

Your twenties and thirties can bring decisions about work, relationships, money, independence, and who you want to become. You may feel pressure to have answers before you have had a chance to find them.

When everyone seems further along

You might be working hard and still wonder whether you are on the right path. Comparing yourself with friends can make uncertainty feel like failure. Other people’s expectations may be louder than your own preferences.

“Quarter-life crisis” is a familiar way to describe this experience. We can begin with the concern behind the phrase: feeling stuck, anxious, lonely, dissatisfied, or unsure what you want.

A useful question to try

Choose one decision that is taking up space in your mind. On paper, finish these three sentences:

  1. What I want, even if I’m unsure, is…
  2. What I feel expected to want is…
  3. One small way to learn more before deciding is…

Look for where your answers agree or pull in different directions. You don’t have to make a major life decision today. A conversation, a short experiment, or gathering one missing piece of information may give you something useful to work with.

Thinking together, then taking something with you

We can explore anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, dating, family expectations, and career uncertainty as they affect your life now. I ask questions and offer feedback as we work toward understanding and possible next steps.

We bring in the past when it helps us understand a present concern. Our conversations can also focus on a boundary, a decision, or something new to try between sessions.
