My approach · Psychoanalytic & psychodynamic psychotherapy

Understand the pattern.
Find more room to choose.

You may understand a problem intellectually and still find yourself repeating it. We can look at what happens in the moment, what it means to you, and what makes a different response difficult.

What this approach pays attention to

Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy pay attention to feelings, relationships, expectations, and patterns that may be difficult to see clearly on your own. We can notice what you anticipate from other people, what you protect yourself from, and what happens when you try to change.

We don’t have to assume we already know the explanation. Your experience helps guide our understanding.

Present concerns, with history when it helps

Our focus is on what you are facing now. Earlier experiences can be useful when they help us understand or work through a present difficulty. We can also spend a session on something happening this week: a conflict, a decision, a worry, or a conversation you want to handle differently.

Active work, useful takeaways

I listen closely and offer questions, feedback, and other perspectives as we think together. The aim is to understand the pattern and create more room to choose how you respond.

Sometimes you leave with a clearer understanding. Sometimes you have a different perspective or something new to try. We can talk openly about what feels helpful and what you want more of.

I bring more than 25 years of psychotherapy experience and postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Read about my training and credentials.

Ask your doctor about psychoanalysis

A short introduction linked on my earlier website. It offers a perspective on the broader psychoanalytic tradition; we can discuss how these ideas relate to your own concerns.
